The Beauty Myth

The Beauty Myth is a nonfiction book by Naomi Wolf which argues that as women have become more powerful in society the standards of physical appearance have also grown.

Wolf believes that "beauty" is a societal construct:

"The more legal and material hindrances women have broken through, the more strictly and heavily and cruelly images of female beauty have come to weigh upon us... during the past decade, women breached the power structure; meanwhile, eating disorders rose exponentially and cosmetic surgery became the fastest-growing specialty... pornography became the main media category, ahead of legitimate films and records combined, and thirty-three thousand American women told researchers that they would rather lose ten to fifteen pounds than achieve any other goal...More women have more money and power and scope and legal recognition than we have ever had before; but in terms of how we feel about ourselves physically, we may actually be worse off than our unliberated grandmothers."

Weight watchers no more...4 week body blitz begins

So here I am, once again trying to decide if weight watchers really is the plan for me. I'm not saying the plan won't work, it does work, I've seen it work, I sit next to people every week who it clearly works for. But there is something missing for me, which probably has nothing to do with weightwatchers and more to do with me head space.

So I bought, read and took the advice of Women's fitness, which boosted a 4 week food plan which would rock your body into shape. Now I ain't stupid, I know 4 weeks is not going to reverse the last 10 years of junk and lack of exercise, and its a strict plan. But I am on a 5 week countdown to my holiday and if I don't do something I will hate myself.

So here I am on day 2 of the 4 week detox plan which includes giving up caffeine, sugar, alcohol, all junk and refined foods, all ready foods...pretty much most of my frikkin diet haha! I am also replacing one of my meals a day with a meal replacement shake.

Yesterday: Berry smoothie made with fruit and almond milk for breakfast, lunch was a 1/2 carton of soup and 2 slices of dry wholemeal bread and a replacement shake for dinner. Snacks included 1 small apple, 1 small pear, 5 brazil nuts and a pot of natural yogurt.

Today: 2 eggs and 1 slice wholemeal toast, lunch salad leaves, pepper, spring onion, can of tuna and 1 tablespoon of 0% fat greek yogurt and a replacement shake for dinner. Snacks included 1 tiny banana, 1 small apple, 5 brazil nuts and a pot of natural yogurt.

2-3 litres of water and lots of green tea...mmmm!

I'm still going to go to weightwatchers, and I am tracking alongside following this plan. Most days I am coming out much lower than my daily allowance given by weightwatchers, but I am keen to kee[ recording the difference. I don't know yet if I want to leave weightwatchers, I know that I'll put a lot back on when I come back from holiday, so I may try maintain on weightwatchers afterwards..

I tell ya something...giving up caffeine has been Hard! God bless the manfriend who was on the receiving end of the abuse on the phone...sorree!!!
