The Beauty Myth

The Beauty Myth is a nonfiction book by Naomi Wolf which argues that as women have become more powerful in society the standards of physical appearance have also grown.

Wolf believes that "beauty" is a societal construct:

"The more legal and material hindrances women have broken through, the more strictly and heavily and cruelly images of female beauty have come to weigh upon us... during the past decade, women breached the power structure; meanwhile, eating disorders rose exponentially and cosmetic surgery became the fastest-growing specialty... pornography became the main media category, ahead of legitimate films and records combined, and thirty-three thousand American women told researchers that they would rather lose ten to fifteen pounds than achieve any other goal...More women have more money and power and scope and legal recognition than we have ever had before; but in terms of how we feel about ourselves physically, we may actually be worse off than our unliberated grandmothers."

Karma = Food Poisioning from a Takeaway!

Warning: Readers with a weak constitution (i.e. who feel sick reading about other people's fluids) please DO NOT continue to read!

It has been some week! Tuesday my brother phones to tell me he got a job as a camp instructor and will be away from April until Sep this year. Wednesday I get the call to say I got my wee flat. Friday my brother passed his theory test. Also my Mum has stopped smoking.

Naturally the Conway family decided to indulge a little on Friday night, wee glass of champagne and a chinese. I LOVE satays, ever since I had one in Thailand, but decided to try and stay reasonable low and go for a mushroom satay rather than meats, and boiled rice.

Saturday...had strange sharp pain in stomach...well more in between my ribs. You know that part of your ribs cage were your ribs are just starting to separate? Just there. Saturday wore on, felt sicker and sicker, was really sore all over, mega tired, no appetite, could smell funny things....something was wrong.

My little **** (and yeah it is little, pretty much non-existent, never has got bigger, even when the rest of me did!) hit the toilet seat Saturday tea time and pretty much stayed there till Monday lunch! I have never been so ill and $hitty feeling in my entire life! I was so drained and weak and it was the most awful experience of my life to date.

Wanna hear my food diary for the weekend:

2 slices of toast
1 banana
6 plain digestives

for 3 days.....

However, good news is I was back to work today (although not 100%) and the storm seems to have passed. Looking forward to NEVER eating mushrooms again!

so no tracking, no exercising, frankly not really caring.... weigh in tomorrow lol, could probably go either way given the natural balances that your body makes up - I'll prob cling to every calorie today and tomorrow!

Either way I am literally glad I am alive...that is all!

I have Neglected you!! and myself!

What A Week!! Busy Busy Busy!!

BUT I got the phone call yesterday - the flat is mine :)) Its just a rental but I am so excited I may pop! This time in 1 week I'll have my keys....this time in 2 weeks....I'll prob be writing this blog in work because I'll have no internet in my flat hahaha!

Put a lb on this week, not tooo bothered to be honest. Had a lovely weekend away with the girls from uni, so that involved drink, food, sweets, snacks and the rest...although I did go for a run Saturday morning before the rest of them had got up! And we traipsed round a wee village in Fife (photo is of me in a Abby in said village) So I probably did some damage limitation, and completed my dare (size12againplease)!!

Plus I lost track...which is THE worst, cause then I think...what's the point, I've only 3 days till weigh-in I'll just wing it.....no more winging it I think!

This week at class I was given free(ish) reign over the second set of scales. We were a few helpers down so I had to plow on myself. Can I just say that I appreciate how nerve wracking it is to stay and have someone weigh you, BUT being the weigher-inner is not much easier!! I was elated at every loss, non-nonchalant at every STS and devastated at every gain. It was a roller coaster of emotions and left me exhausted! Home and straight to bed last night!

But here I am, back on track, with 3 points to spare and a weight watchers ice cream calling my name from the fridge (safe in the knowledge I can have it!) and looking forward to when I can properly plan, track, cook and eat the right foods at the right portions. I used to hate people like me at diet clubs, I used to think "its easy for them, they don't have a mother cooking for them" (you can replace mother with whoever you wish to blame for your inability to loss this week).

I am nervous because I cannot cook, I've never reeeally had to, unless its pasta or the like. But then I was thinking to myself this inability to cook, being forced into a position where I will have to, and concurrently being on weight watchers will be a good thing. I have to learn, so I may as well learn using the WW recipes and guidelines and hopefully, hopefully, develop good cooking habits for life....

may also keep the local take aways number on the fridge....just in case

BIG news!!!

Drum roll please......I have just..........put a deposit down on my 1st FLAT!!!!!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

I am so so so so excited but so so so so nervous! I hope it will all go well :s
Oh my goodness.....I am a grown up! Oi!!

Was thinking about the impact this will have have on my weight (I lost a full 2lbs this week!!!) and one thing I can say is I will officially have no one else to blame! For years I've said how hard it is when your mum makes you dinner, and my uncle....you don't know what's in it, you don't know how much you have...

Now the buck stops at just 1 person.....ME! And tbh I think this will be a pivotal moment in my weight loss...Given the fact I'm not going to be able to AFFORD as much treats/nights out/takeaways....I am also going to have the space and time to do Sunday batch cooking, and a big freezer all to myself!

Must puts LOTS of tupperwear on my housewarming giftlist!!

Also, I will need lots of support from you guys that live alone etc... :)) help me through what is bound to be a fairly stressful period of time which will inevitably involve me having to clear out a lot of stuff from my parents :(

An End of Day Quickie!

Well its twenty to five, I'm alone in the office and if I do say so myself I have worked pretty dam hard today. SO I figured I'd take the last 30mins to read some blogs I've missed, due to several late nights in a row.

This week has been....(sitting thinking of the right word) I don't really know how to describe it, I haven't been particularly bad, nor particularly good either. Had a terrible night out, and according to my tracker I am in negative points, so I ain't expecting miracles this week at WI. But tbh I am not too upset about it, I made a mistake at the week and I plan to get weighed, forget about last week and move on.

I have been a bit all over this place due to evening activities. Monday I had a late meeting in Glasgow so had no dinner till 8.30pm which I hate doing (I genuianlly rarely munch after my tea, never after 7!!) and then Tuesday I had some pasta quickly before heading off for my first night as a guide leader (I know how exciting right!!).

This week I have been having some problems with the bathroom (and I don't mean I'm trying to grout the tiles :s) prob should have put some sort of poo warning in the blog title like cookie_lou does...sorry!

But things aren't moving well (put it politely). I have long standing issues with the bathroom, but my recent attention and improvement in my diet has meant I was not as reliant on medication. Seems we're retracting (sorry...) slightly and I have been to doc for fibergel (yuck!). Thing is when I do feel like this...I hate eating. I have no appetite and can't be bothered with anything in particular. I just want quick, easy and light...resulting in an over reliance on toast!

But tonight I am doing my 1st run in 2 weeks, had to stop due to the worst cold I've had in a looong time. So hopefully that, along with the medicine, and a less hectic schedule will help re-start (I know, but its true!!) things!

Although saying that I may be putting a deposit down for a flat tomorrow...can't see the hecticness (is that a word) lessening any :o its all very grown up!!

Will let you know how WI goes etc...just wanted to kill some time before work ends!

Actually just realised this is my 50th blog post....do I get a star or something

Death by Hangover!

Is it just me or is anybody else finding their alcohol tolerence level is getting lower along with their weight! I mean don't get me wrong what I drank on Friday night should have got me drunk, but the state of me, and the HANGOVER - OFT!!!

In my usualy I-hate-myself-and-feel-so-guilty-about-everything-I've-ever-done hugonver state I really started to think about alcohol, and my attitude towards. You see the thing is I genuianlly genuinally do not mean to get as drunk as what I do. Friday night I knew I was drunk, in fact I was on the water, but we left the pub to go dancing and thats the last thing I remember. Good thing I've got good mates who know how to drag a young lady home :)

So, as part of my soul searching I decided to learn a little bit more about hangovers. In fact, hangovers are caused by ethanol, which is found in alcohol. Ethanol is a toxic substance (yes thats right...toxic) and the result of this in your body is an increased need to pee (breaking the seal and all that...) and as a result of this you become dehydrated! Hence the dry brain the next day.

So on I continued to read and I found this neat tool on the drinkaware site called mydrinkaware. Its really quick and easy to use (especially if you have facebook) and what I read truely disgusted me. My Friday night binge resulted in me consuming around 20units of alcohol (and thats a guesstimate!) which is just shy of 2000calories! The equivilant to eating 6.6burgers, 1.9 Kebabs or 9 donuts!! The night cost me an estimate £47.90!

The reality hit home with the risk factor app, which highlighted me at increasing risk. This is when you regularly exceeded the recommended daily unit allowence 4 or more times a week OR if women drink in excess of 14units (21 for men - typical!) in one go...

opps.... I am officially a binge drinker! And as a result I am at increased risk of mental health problems, getting hurt (or in worst case scenario die) when on a bender, becoming alcohol dependent, self harm, end up in jail (bye bye career) and have a poor sexual perfomance (oh wait...maybe thats just the men).

Point is maybe I need to explore my relationship with alcohol...and looking at calories alone, ok I pointed every drink (that I could remember) but thats a rediculous amount of points (and money) to spend on alcohol. Mulling over the idea of a month without alcohol lasted all of two mins, when I remembered that its my weekend away with the girlies next week.... $hit!

Ok...mini challenge to myself...this weekend I am going to drink...more responsibily. I am not going to over undulge, there will be no throwing up and I will have water/soft drinks in between! I shall report back next week to let you know how it goes!!

Hope you all had a less painful weekend that me :)

A week of 1s!

Well, following Tuesdays exciting WeightWatchers update I can bring you 1st hand news from the weigh-in and 1st week as an official WWer helper :)

First big news was a 1lb loss...1 WHOLE pound! I was so happy with this as I was very worried last weeks .5lb loss may have been a blip, but obviously not! Despite illness and not being as on track as a result I still lost 1lb! In addition, this 1lb loss takes me into the 11s - where I have not resided since I was about 20!! This was an emotional moment...there were (almost) tears. And what's more this 1lb loss, that takes me into the 11s, also leaves me with 1lb to go until my 1st official 1stone!

Can anybody else see a pattern here!!

But more importantly it was also my 1st week as a helper, following my invite from leader Lee. I was kind of nervous, and at first was tempted to decline as I really enjoy the meetings and I've always stayed when I can (which is more often than not). However Lee asks us helpers to sit in on the meetings now, which makes such a big difference to the class! So now I get the  best of both worlds!!

Next week I'm going to weigh (ECK! Such Responsibility) so the Coylton lot better come in with lots of losses so I can give lots of good news at the scales!!

I'm really looking forward to being a helper now, I know the plan and what I have to do - and maybe preaching, will get me practicing. After all, as Lee pointed out, as helpers we are advocates for the plan! We need to show others how well it works!! and to do that we have to stick to it!!!

So here's to a week of 1s! and looking forward to many more 1sts - like 10%, more silver 7s, 2st, 3st and then maybe...just maybe I can hope for the ultimate 1st - GOAL!
