About Me

I am a contradiction, a thoughtful contradiction. I have thoughts, and I want to share them. I am a blogger....

The Beauty Myth

The Beauty Myth is a nonfiction book by Naomi Wolf which argues that as women have become more powerful in society the standards of physical appearance have also grown.

Wolf believes that "beauty" is a societal construct:

"The more legal and material hindrances women have broken through, the more strictly and heavily and cruelly images of female beauty have come to weigh upon us... during the past decade, women breached the power structure; meanwhile, eating disorders rose exponentially and cosmetic surgery became the fastest-growing specialty... pornography became the main media category, ahead of legitimate films and records combined, and thirty-three thousand American women told researchers that they would rather lose ten to fifteen pounds than achieve any other goal...More women have more money and power and scope and legal recognition than we have ever had before; but in terms of how we feel about ourselves physically, we may actually be worse off than our unliberated grandmothers."

The gift of human kindness

one of the most enjoyable things about blogging, and the primary reason I do it, is because of the responses I get. People tell me my blog inspires them, others tell me they understand what I am talking about, some say it makes them think. Most tell me that it make them laugh!

Interestingly though I got a more unusual response from one of my recent blogs, where I honestly, and at times painfully, described my struggle with my nicotine addiction. Helplessness.

My cousin, who I did not realise read my blogs, messaged me. Telling me that my writing had made him feel helpless. At first I found this a strange response, as my struggle with nicotine doesn't really directly impact him. He explained though that my writing had made him want to help, to do something that would help me overcome my addiction and motivated me to keep moving on.

He, I would say in a complete selfless act, has offered to take me mountain biking! Nothing to do with the fact that he loves mountain biking, and has done not one, but TWO, long distance charity cycles.

Completely selfless, as I said.

I am nervous, but excited. We're going in September and I currently waiting on the details. I just hope that I don't make too much of a fool of myself!

me and my handsome cousin - we got good genes!!
